| Tiwi Designs |
Tiwi designs were originally given to the Tiwi people by their spirit ancestors who sanctioned individuality of creative expression. Painted designs were seen on the body, on ceremonial objects and also appeared on the insides of Tiwi bark shelters. Representing dances, ceremonies, stars, landscape and weapons, the art of the Tiwi today reflects these body paint designs through abstract linear, cross-hatched and dotted painting techniques.
Waniyangirri (They sent a message) showcases the next generation of Tiwi artists - Margaret Kerinauia, Roslyn Orsto, Immaculata Tipiloura and Ita Tipungwuti.
The exhibition will be opened by Roslyn Orsto and
Ita Tipungwuti at Mossenson Galleries Collingwood
from 6-8pm, Tuesday 14 September 2010.
