Ahalpere Country
Gladdy and Ally Kemarre

Indigenart, The Mossenson Galleries is very proud to present the first major exhibition of works by two sisters who have been involved with the art community at Utopia since its genesis.

Ahalpere Country presents a series of new works by Gladdy and Ally Kemarre, representing stories of bush tucker in Ahalpere country, in the southeast of Utopia, Northern Territory.

Gladdy and Ally Kemarre are sisters from the Anmatyerre group in the eastern desert who have been involved in the Utopia art movement since its inception. The body of work presented in this exhibition situates them amongst the most vital and yet delicate artists working at Utopia, and is the product of over a year’s assiduous work.

Their art has developed remarkably in the past eighteen months, increasing rapidly in depth, subtlety and sheer vibrancy and energy of colour and design.

The story of the bush plum is crucial to Anmatyerre women’s ceremonies, and intertwines with that of the whole country. These works are the result of an accumulation of great knowledge about the Country for which these artists are caretakers, knowledge that encompasses geographical, botanical and spiritual dimensions.
