Boundary Riders
Loongkoonan, Lucy Ward, Gilgi, Peggy Wassi

In recent years, the women artists of the Kimberley have been quietly forging a new path in Indigenous art, moving from strength to strength as their ideas unfold and develop in startling new directions. Whilst steeped in traditional Kimberley knowledge, they have consistently tested the boundaries of what might be considered ‘traditional’ Kimberley art.

In a few short years of painting, they have created a new language of painting that locates their intricate and affectionate knowledge of Country and Law within an almost avant-garde style of painterly expressiveness.

These artists have achieved almost immediate acclaim, exhibiting across the country being selected in, and awarded some of Australia’s most prestigious art prizes, including the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award, Wynne Prize, Arthur Guy Memorial Painting Prize, Fletcher Jones Art Prize, John Leslie Art Prize, Blake Prize, Redland Art Awards, Fleurieu Biennale, Bankwest Contemporary Art Prize, City of Perth Art Award, Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize, Alice Prize, Sunshine Coast Art Prize, Drawing Together Art Award, and Canberra Art Prize.

The exhibition which features work by Loongkoonan, Lucy Ward, Peggy Wassi, Gilgi, Agnes Armstrong and Daisy Bitting will be opened by The Hon. Margaret Quirk, Minister for Small Business on Wednesday 26 September at 6.30pm.
