Emma Daniel Nungarayi is a respected elder of Warlpiri people of Australia's central desert. Since 2004, she has established herself as one of the most unique and vibrant talents at the Ngurratjuta Iltja Ntjarra Art Centre in Alice Springs. With a fluid style, that makes use of bright tonal contrasts and strong brush strokes, he works have received considerable critical acclaim, being recently acquired by the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
Emma holds much traditional knowledge, not only in story form, but also song and dance and conveys this knowledge through her works with bold motifs and strong colour that reflect the emotional resonance that these stories hold for her. Emma's works exude a knowledge and passion for her country, and reveal her close observations of the changing colour and form of the landscape.
Emma's paintings relate women's Dreaming stories and ceremonial dancing, with images of bush tucker and traditional body paint designs. She paints stories including yalka (bush onion) and maku (witchetty grub) and Kalipinpa (Water Dreaming), and her works often relate to the site of Karinyarra (Mount Wedge). Overflowing with a full palette of animated and vivacious colours, her paintings are redolent with a sense of joy towards her Country and culture.
