Emma Daniel Nungarayi is a respected Warlpiri elder who has established herself as one of the most unique and vibrant talents at the the Ngurratjuta Art Centre. Since commencing an artistic career in 2004, she has received critical acclaim for her depictions of women’s Dreaming stories and ceremonial dancing, bush tucker and traditional body paint designs.
The works of Karrinyarra – My Home have been executed with a full palette of animated, vivacious colour and demonstrate the assuredness and fluidity of style for which Emma is achieving recognition. Emma’s works exude a knowledge and passion for her country, and reveal her close observations of the changing colour and form of the landscape.
Emma’s intimate knowledge of traditional song and dance is highlighted in her paintings. Her singing whilst putting paint to canvas renews the connections to country proclaimed in her art. In the same way that a skilled landscape photographer might attempt to microscopically document the extraordinary central Australian landscape, Emma ‘zooms in’ on the bushtucker which abounds in and around Mount Wedge, 350 kilometres north-west of Alice Springs, frequently painting yalka (bush onion) and maku (witchetty grub). Emma’s panoramic works are those in which, ‘zooming out,’ she captures the inherent ancestral associations of her beloved Karrinyarra in glorious and unbridled colour.
In 2007, the Art Gallery of New South Wales acquired three of Emma’s works. This acquisition followed a sell-out of Emma’s first solo exhibition which was held at Mossenson Galleries in Perth, and an exhibition of her works in Paris. Emma has been selected as a finalist in the 2008 Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards held at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory.
Part proceeds from the sale of works in these exhibitions will go to the Western Desert Nganampa Walytja Palyantjaku Tjutaku Aboriginal Corporation to fund "Trips to Country". Western Desert Nganampa Walytja Palyantjaku Tjutaku (WDNWPT)is a charity that supports renal patients from remote communities who have had to relocate to Alice Springs for lifelong dialysis treatment.
