Born in 1980, Barayuwa Mununggurr is one of the rising stars of Buku-Larrnggay Mulka (Yirrkala, NT). Born to mother Binggitj and Father Yanbara at Wandawuy Homeland near the mining town of Nhulunbuy, as a young boy, Barayuwa learned to hunt with a spear in the bush for kangaroo, emu and goanna, and in the water for fish, stingray and turtle. At six years of age, he moved to Yirrkala to stay with his mukul (aunt) Marrnyula Mununggurr and to attend Yirrkala school.
In 2003, Barayuwa and his wife Whaiora commenced working at Buku-Larrnggay Mulka art centre. At Buku-Larrnggay Mulka, Barayuwa provides assistance to all the artists of the community. Through watching and assisting established artists, Barayuwa has developed a fine hand, becoming an artist in his own right. He paints both his own Djapul clan designs as well as his mother’s Munyuku clan designs. Since 2007 he has exhibited to acclaim in group exhibitions in Darwin, Hobart and Sydney.
Mossenson Galleries in conjunction with Buku-Larrnggay Mulka are pleased to present a new exhibition of paintings on bark and larrakitj (ceremonial poles) from this exciting young artist.
The exhibition will be opened at 6pm on Tuesday 17 February 2009 by Dr John E. Stanton, Director, Berdnt Museum of Anthropology, University of Western Australia.
