Omborrin: The Munja Country Print Folio
Omborin
Omborrin:The Munja Country Print Folio Melbourne: 4 July - 8 August 2009 The exhibition will be opened at 41 Derby Street, Collingwood 2pm Saturday 4 July 2009 with a floortalk by Henry F. Skerritt Writer/Curator

Sunday 12 April 2009 saw the passing of a great songman and artist. Born around 1930 at Kunmunya on the Kimberley coast, Omborrin was one of the most senior Ngarinyin songmen and is a respected custodian of rare stories, songs and ancient cultural teachings.

A master of narrative painting, Omborrin's works drew upon a lifetime’s accumulation of knowledge. His depictions of spirit figures such as the Schuwarr, Amalan and Wandjina resound with a deep integrity and respect for his rock art heritage while presenting a unique artistic vision entirely free of hyperbole. All unnecessary elements were expelled from the canvas, allowing their elemental spiritual energy to pour forth.

In August 2008, Omborrin travelled to Darwin to work with printmakers Gertjan Forrer and Jacqueline Gribbin of Northern Editions. The result: a stunning folio of six prints depicting some of Omborrin’s most iconic and important images.

Searing from the page, Omborrin’s majestic new print series sings of Munja country with an authority and grace that rolls in from the estuaries and plains of Omborrin’s homeland. They are the legacy of a great songman, a heartfelt tribute to his country and a vital record for future generations.

Mossenson Galleries are proud to present the final chapter in this great artist's career. Omborrin: The Munja Country Print Folio will be launched at 41 Derby Street Collingwood at 2pm on Saturday 4 July 2009 with a floortalk by writer and curator Henry Skerritt.
